ACCU COAT Applicators™

Accu Coat Applicator

Teflon-coated four-sided applicators; seven depth ranges, from 0.5 to 12.0 mils, offer extended versatility

Application and cleanup are remarkably fast and easy

Supplied in protective cushioned packaging – with reasonable care, these affordable tools can last for years

Description: The blade of this unique applicator design measures only 0.5" x 0.5" x 2.5" (1.3cm x 1.3cm x 6.3cm). A 1.5" (3.8cm) wide precision ground gate is centered on each of the four edges. This restricted passage channels the flow of the liquid to be evaluated through the gate while metering the wet film thickness applied. It is intended as an easier and less time-consuming alternative to Mayer rods and Bird-bar style applicators. These tools can produce high quality drawdowns in a confined area, making direct benchtop testing of inks and coatings a reality (for best results, we strongly suggest use of The Diversified Drawown Platform). Quick changeover from gate to gate allows direct comparisons of different coating thicknesses. Not recommended for flexo ink proofing.

Blade Angle vs. Wet Film Thickness ChartUse: The wet film thickness (WFT) applied can be varied, based the angle at which the tool is held (please see the figure at right); a 45° angle produces the greatest clearance, yielding a wet film approximately equal to the depth of the gate. By holding the ACCU COAT Applicator™ at more acute angles, the passage depth is reduced, resulting in a thinner coating. In theory, a 22° angle produces a wet film roughly half of gate depth. We do not recommend holding the tool at an angle steeper than 50°. Coating rheology affects WFT; critical applications should be checked with a precise WFT gage such as those shown here.

The ACCU PAINTProofer

Description: This design is intended specifically for proofing paints and architectural coatings. Color match, coverage, drying time, gloss, and other critical properties can be evaluated easily with this compact, simple tool. The four gates are precision ground to depths of 3.8, 4.2, 4.6, and 5.0 mils, making it possible to test over the standard range of single-coat paint film thicknesses.

Use: Use of this tool is identical to the other ACCU COAT Applicators™ It will not usually be necessary to vary the angle of application; the closely stepped passage depths offered by the four sides of this proofer will generally demonstrate differences in finish properties without finer discernment.

The ACCU PAINT Proofer™ can be used in the formulator’s lab for product development and quality control, or in the field to demonstrate the actual finish produced by your paint when applied uniformly at the wet film thickness you recommend. Custom proofers, with different path widths or gate depths, can be manufactured to your specifications as well.
